๐ช๐บ GDPR-ready ยท data stays in the EU
Your location, your rules
Vicinity only knows where you are while you actively choose to share. No ad tracking, no selling data, no silent background collection. Everything below is switchable โ and withdrawing a consent takes effect immediately.
Consent controls
Precise location while sharing
Only sent while a circle, meetup or guardian session is actively running. Pause any time โ sharing stops instantly.
โณ Location pings auto-delete 24 hours after a session ends.
Show me on the nearby radar
Other signed-in people within your radius can see your name, emoji and rough distance. Turn this off and you go invisible.
โณ Coarse position kept only while you are online; cleared after 20 minutes idle.
Bluetooth crowd mode
Used at festivals to tell 5 m from 50 m when GPS gives up. Signal strength never leaves your device.
โณ Nothing stored โ processed live in your browser only.
Disaster alerts near me
Lets Vicinity match official EU hazard feeds against your area so you get warned. Always free, never used for ads.
โณ Hazard matches are computed on the fly, not stored.
How long we keep things
Location-sharing policy in plain words
- ๐ Sharing is always session-based. Nothing is sent when no session is running.
- ๐ช In circles, only people holding the invite link โ and inside its time window โ can see you.
- ๐ก๏ธ Guardian sharing needs the watched person to accept on their own device, and they can end it any time.
- ๐ก On the nearby radar, strangers see your rough distance, never your street address, until you both choose to meet.
- ๐จ Disaster mode never shares your position unless you post a report or tap โI'm safeโ.
- ๐ซ No data is sold, profiled for advertising, or transferred outside the EU/EEA.
Your rights
Legal basis: consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR) for location sharing, legitimate interest for safety and abuse prevention, and vital interest for disaster alerts. Questions or a complaint? Reach the Vicinity team through the app โ you can also contact your national data protection authority.
